At your VO2 max you create an oxygen debt that will kill off any malfunctioning mitochondria. This also forces the healthy mitochondria to become more efficient at creating ATP. Consistent training will cause your heart to grow stronger. More capillaries will also develop in your muscles to help you transfer more oxygen. Together, these improvements will enable you to pump blood with more power. Your body will also demand more energy.

IMPORTANCE OF AEROBIC FITNESS (VO2MAX)
Introduction
Maximal oxygen uptake or consumption (VO2max) means the maximal capacity of an individual to perform aerobic work. It is the product of cardiac output (CO) and arteriovenous oxygen (AV-O2) difference at exhaustion, and the golden standard measure for a person’s aerobic fitness [1]. It refers to the maximal amount of oxygen the individual can utilize typically over one minute during an intense, maximal effort. Aerobic fitness is related to a person’s ability to perform dynamic, moderate-to-high intensity physical activity with large muscle groups for prolonged periods. Thus, it expresses the abilities of both cardiorespiratory and muscular systems to transport and utilize oxygen for energy. It is one of the most fundamental measures of human physiology with remarkable health, wellbeing, life quality, work ability, and performance related associations.

VO2 max is the measure of aerobic capacity and determined as international standard of physical capacity. It is expressed as liters of O2 / min or ml of O2 per kg of body wt/min. Training increases VO2 max by increasing the cardiac output secondary to high stroke volume

Training also increases Arterio-venous oxygen difference . Physical training increases VO2 max, 50% of the increase comes from increasing stroke volume, and 50% of the increase is due to increased extraction of oxygen by working muscles, which is reflected in an increased arterio-venous difference. The intense aerobic endurance training can induce considerable enlargement of all muscles with a change in cardiac configuration. Training increases density of capillaries in skeletal muscles. This increased capacity to irrigate the muscles with blood lead to increased vascularization .Training also results in increase in number of mitochondria, with increased capacity to generate ATP aerobically by oxidative phosphorylation.

VO2 max increases cardio-respiratory fitness and it is the predictor of success in endurance events.
